CHINA. The Moodie Davitt Report is stepping up its Mandarin language coverage of key China-related stories for 2022, anchored by our popular WeChat Official Account, published on Mondays four times a month.

Moodie Davitt WeChat is curated under the direction of Penelope Zhou, our Hong Kong-based Chinese Editor, and company Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie, also based in Hong Kong. They are supported by two further staff in Mainland China.

The lead story detailed the opening of China Duty Free Group’s (CDFG) first flagship store in Macau.

The store is located on the first floor of The Bazar – a garden-themed shopping mall – of the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau and houses over 170 high-end brands across multiple categories including fashion, accessories, watches, jewellery, cosmetics, perfumes, wines, gourmet delights and souvenirs.

China Duty Free Group (CDFG) celebrated the opening of its first flagship store in Macau on 31 December 2021. With ‘an aura or minimalism and voguishness’, the store is located on the first floor of The Bazar of the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau. We also reported that Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is set to issue a tender for two luxury stores at Terminal 2 this month. The airport operator, which aims to create a more diverse shopping experience for T2 travellers, is tendering two units at the south end of the Luxury Brand Boulevard. We joined Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex (HTDF), operated by licence holder Hainan Tourism Investment Duty Free Co, in celebrating its first anniversary in Sanya. On opening, the 30,000sq m of retail space over five floors featured 278 brands – many of which were new to Hainan – spanning perfumes & cosmetics, fashion & accessories, watches & jewellery, wines & spirits, confectionery & fine food and toys. Affirmation of the strength of Hainan’s offshore duty free business as 2021 sales increase +83% year-on-year to US$7.94 billion, with total revenues hitting US$9.47 billion. The results showed a +73% rise in the number of shoppers (9,676,600) while the number of duty free items purchased increased by +71% to 53,492,500. Hainan has five duty free licence holders – China Duty Free Group, CNSC, Hainan Tourism Investment Duty Free Co (which runs Hainan Tourism Duty Free Shopping Complex), Hainan Development Holdings (Global Premium Duty Free Plaza) and Shenzhen Duty Free (Times DF in Mission Hills Haikou). The countdown begins: The Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development (Hainan IEDB) has released further details of the second China International Consumer Products Expo (Hainan Expo). Coach class of the luxury kind: China Duty Free Group applauds the success of an innovative campaign with American luxury house Coach and Atlantis Sanya, linked to promotional activities at the brand’s boutique within the Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex in Haitang Bay. The Atlantis Sanya pop-up, open from 11 December to 10 January, features Coach’s dinosaur mascot Rexy, who has come to Sanya for a ‘vacation’, bringing a range of exclusive surprises to Hainan. A birthday party-themed outdoor pop-up store at Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex is showcasing Max Mara’s Capsule Collection and aims to offer customers a “unique shopping experience”.
