News of big celebrations led the way as Hainan Development Holdings’ Global Premium Duty Free (GDF) Plaza marked its one-year anniversary with events and promotional activities, attracting large numbers of tourists and local residents.

GDF Plaza opened on 31 January, 2021 but with Chinese New Year falling early in 2022 (1 February), it was decided to kick-off the extensive anniversary celebrations in advance.

Let the celebrations begin: Big news as Hainan Development Holdings’ Global Premium Duty Free (GDF) Plaza marks its one-year anniversary. From 15 January until the end of February, GDF Plaza is hosting a series of themed activities featuring an array of international brands. FAB-ulous food: Another major story as Shanghai Hongqiao Airport steps up its foodie focus through an upgrade of the food & beverage triangle zone in Terminal 2. Dubbed the Hongqaio Gourmet Promenade, its refreshed line-up offers a wide range of popular and trendy restaurants and cafés, including Arabica, burger brand Shake Shack (marking its China debut) and deli food concept Baker & Spice. L’Oréal goes Lunar: We also highlighted how L’Oréal Travel Retail Asia Pacific has teamed up with China Duty Free Group (CDFG) to host a digital-first Lunar New Year takeover in Hainan. The L’Oréal Paris Maison pop-up, at the Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex in Haitang Bay, showcases the brand’s CDF-exclusive Revitalift Filler HA Serum through a fully-integrated O2O experience. Taking story-telling to new heights: Shiseido Travel Retail partnered with China Duty Free Group (CDFG) in a dazzling celebration of the New Year. A 300-strong drone show illuminated the sky above the Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex on 1 January, showcasing various Shiseido and CDFG symbols including the Japanese brand’s camellia emblem, its Ultimune Serum line and the tiger, the 2022 Lunar New Year zodiac animal. A sparkling showcase: CDFG has stepped up its focus on jewellery in Hainan, diversifying its offer to include renowned global fine jewellery brands DeBeers Forevermark, Tasaki and Messika. The watches and jewellery category has boomed in the travel retail hotspot of Hainan since the scrapping of the former single item value allowance of RMB8,000 (US$1,129) in the enhanced duty free policy introduced in July 2020. DeBeers Forevermark opened its first Hainan flagship on 27 November, claiming a prime location on Floor L of the CDFG shopping complex at Haikou Mova Mall. A roaring start: Leading luxury travel retailer DFS Group has kicked off its Lunar New Year celebrations with a series of exclusive product offers, in-store activations and interactive online activities through selected airport and downtown T Galleria locations worldwide as well as online at DFS.com. The DFS Lunar New Year Gift Guide offers products across beauty & fragrances, fashion & accessories, watches & jewellery and wines & spirits. A livestream event on 26 January will highlight special offers and a collection of more than 50 curated items. And, for the first time, customers can also celebrate Lunar New Year with DFS’ Chief Gifting Officers, Reddi and Vila, who will share their gifting recommendations via DFS’ social media channels. A world of wonders: William Grant & Sons-owned Scotch whisky brand Glenfiddich has also marked Lunar New Year with a travel retail-exclusive expression of its Gran Reserva 21 Year Old Single Malt. The limited-edition pack features a design by acclaimed illustrator Rlon Wang which, according to William Grant & Sons, evokes “a world of good fortune and auspicious wonders”. A handbook for a lighthouse: Swedish beauty technology and wellbeing house Foreo and sister brand FAQ have extended their sponsorship of the Hainan Curated newsletter in partnership with The Moodie Davitt Report. Hainan Curated is a fortnightly newsletter that links to our unrivalled web coverage of Hainan Island’s booming offshore duty free sector. Foreo Global Travel Retail Director Gary Leong describes the newsletter as a “handbook for brands wishing to explore the famed region” and Hainan as “a lighthouse for the travel retail segment over the past few years”.
