MK Illumination lights up for Christmas in Berlin and Munich

GERMANY. MK Illumination was recently awarded two tenders in Germany to create festive lighting installations at Berlin Tegel and Schönefeld airports and at Munich Airport.

At Berlin Tegel and Schönefeld, the Austrian conceptual lighting specialist has taken inspiration from the Morovian star, a Christmas symbol originating in Germany. Strings of draped lights have been arranged along concourses at each, while at Schönefeld a 200m-long LED curtain decorates the airport’s façade.

The festive installation at Munich Airport can be adapted to suit various themes and events, meaning the creation can remain beyond the Christmas period.

At Munich Airport, the project has focused on a high-traffic area between the parking lot and the terminal, explained MK Illumination. The team said it worked closely with the airport to devise a solution that embraced the architectural characteristics of the space, creating an installation that is “both impressive and modular”.

The central element is a cloud of illuminated shopping bags that appear to float in the air. These are designed to be adaptable to different events and seasons throughout the year, making the installation viable beyond the holiday period.

At Berlin Schönefeld (above and below), festive lights have transformed the airport’s façade and are draped overhead along the concourse.

The Morovian star motif continues at Berlin Tegel, with cascading lights once again adding a festive spirit to the concourse.
