‘Minor fire’ at Abu Dhabi Airport linked to suspected drone attack

The explosions in a nearby oil facility had only a minor impact on airport operations according to national carrier Etihad Airways

UAE. A suspected drone attack at an oil facility in Abu Dhabi killed three people on Monday and also caused what police called a ‘minor fire’ at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

As reported by news agencies today, Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed an attack on an oil facility belonging to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, in the Mussafah area close to the airport.

Through Emirates News Agency (WAM), the official news agency of the UAE, police confirmed that explosions had taken place at three petrol tankers in Abu Dhabi National Oil Company storage areas. Police stated that “a minor fire also broke out in the new construction area of Abu Dhabi International Airport”.

A police statement added that “preliminary investigations suggest that the cause of the fires are small flying objects, possibly belonging to drones,” with an investigation being carried out.

Etihad Airways said that a small number of flights were briefly disrupted due to “precautionary measures”, but that normal operations quickly resumed.
