Macau’s strong tourism recovery continues in February

MACAU, CHINA. Macau’s tourism sector continued to recover at a strong pace in February, attracting 1,593,743 visitors, a year-on-year increase of +143.1%. That is according to the latest figures from the Statistics and Census Service.

The figures were also a +14% increase compared to January, when the Special Administrative Region attracted more than one million visitors for the first time in nearly three years.

The numbers for February are still just 45% of those in pre-pandemic 2019. In the same month in 2019, visitor arrivals reached more than 3.5 million.

The top market for visitor arrivals was Mainland China, accounting for 1,003,999 of the overall numbers. This represented a +64.8% increase from the same period last year. Among these, 634,538 travelled under the Individual Visit Scheme, up by +222.9% year on year.

The Asian gaming hub also drew 523,271 visitors from Hong Kong, a year-on-year surge of +1,163.7%, while those visiting from Taiwan reached 22,411, a +372.6% jump compared to the same month of 2022.

In the first two months of 2023, inbound visitor arrivals to Macau grew by +121.6% year-on-year to 2.9 million. ✈
