L’Oréal Group set to acquire Japanese premium skincare company Takami Co

L’Oréal Group has signed an agreement to acquire Japanese premium skincare company Takami Co. The acquisition is set to complete in the next few weeks. Takami Co develops and markets products licenced by the Takami skincare brand.

L’Oréal Group also renewed a long-term brand licensing agreement with Dr. Hiroshi Takami — founder of the Takami skincare brand — in addition to signing a collaboration contract for Takami’s two eponymous dermatological clinics in Tokyo.

Takami is a premium skincare brand that specialises in skin peeling. The brand was founded in 1999 and leverages the know-how of Dr. Hiroshi Takami’s dermatological and aesthetic clinics in Tokyo. Its hero product, the Skin Peel Pre-serum, is known as the ‘little blue bottle’ by its predominantly Asian clientele. The brand is available in Japan and in some other Asia Pacific markets, including the Chinese domestic market where the brand is particularly popular.

Takami benefits from an omnichannel distribution network. It achieved net sales of €50 million (US$60.7 million) in 2019 and grew its business in 2020 despite the challenges of COVID-19.

By acquiring Takami Co, L’Oréal Group aims to further expand the brand’s retail network in the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Commenting on the acquisition, L’Oréal Luxe President Cyril Chapuy said: “We are very pleased to welcome the Takami brand into our portfolio. Its reputation in Asia matches the remarkable quality of its products. Its expertise in prestigious beauty treatments and its omnichannel distribution make it a very complementary brand within L’Oréal Luxe.”

“Born from the expertise of the aesthetic and dermatological Takami clinics, our products provide the quality and the efficacy expected by the most demanding Japanese consumers,” said Takami Co President and Owner Yuji Okamura.

“After 21 years of growth in Japan, we are thrilled to join the L’Oréal Group, the world’s leading beauty company, which will allow us to develop our brand thanks to its scientific and international expertise.”

L’Oréal Japan President Jérôme Bruhat added, “The Takami brand teams led by Mr. Okamura have been able to build a strong reputation in skincare expertise, a unique visual identity and a core group of loyal customers in Japan. These are the pillars of the brand’s success that we will grow further in the future.”

L’Oréal Luxe believes Takami Co’s omnichannel distribution and prestige-appeal makes it an excellent addition to its luxury portfolio
