UK. London City Airport has named a new Chairman ahead of work starting on the hub’s major development programme.

Experienced transport executive Sir Terry Morgan has joined the board and will take over as its new Chairman once Roy Griffins retires later this year. Griffins has been in the role for over ten years, overseeing significant growth in passenger levels during that time.

Sir Terry is currently a Non-Executive Chairman of Crossrail Limited and engineering consultancy Ricardo. He was CEO of Tube Lines from 2002-2009 and Managing Director of Land Rover vehicles in the early 1990s.

The change of Chairman will come before a £344 million transformation project at the airport, which was granted planning permission approval last summer.

City Airport’s development programme includes plans for seven new aircraft stands, a parallel taxi-way and passenger terminal extension, which the airport said will enable 6.5 million passengers to use the hub by 2025.

The Moodie Davitt Report understands the project will result in an approximate 160% increase in space for retail and food & beverage outlets.

In January the airport unveiled a new café-bar from Truman’s Brewery called Brick Lane Brews, which the operator opened to bring a local East End menu to visiting passengers.

Sir Terry said: “I am delighted to be taking on this role at such an exciting period at London City Airport with the City Airport Development Programme having been granted formal planning permission in 2016.

“I look forward to working with the board, shareholders and executive team to help the business to fulfil its potential over the coming years.”

London City has reported several years of annual passenger growth, and in 2015 it welcomed a record 4.3 million passengers.
