INTERNATIONAL. Welcome to the September 2017 edition of Moodie Davitt Interactive, our fusion of print and digital formats.

Our major feature focuses on the ten biggest airports worldwide by international passenger volumes. We look at the big current and upcoming commercial projects at each, present historical and forecast sales and spend data, and highlight each airport’s medium to long term vision.

The list is led by Dubai International, where traffic growth has been mirrored by the surging retail business delivered by Dubai Duty Free – from US$20 million in sales in 1984 to US$1.85 billion last year.

There is plenty more in this edition besides, not least an on location report from what promises to be one of the most exciting travel retail developments of coming years.

In late 2019, Paris will witness the reincarnation of one of its most revered institutions, La Samaritaine. And DFS, the world’s leading luxury travel retailer, is at the heart of the revival. The multi-purpose project will house DFS’ first department store in the city, reviving an institution that was established in 1870.

Martin Moodie pays a visit to the site in Paris, and speaks to DFS Chairman and CEO Philippe Schaus and to Region President Europe & Middle East Eléonore de Boysson about the ambitious development.

We also devote extensive space in this edition to travel food & beverage, a sector The Moodie Davitt Report has long championed – through our title The Foodie Report and our annual Airport Food & Beverage Conference and Awards.

In addition, we are pleased to bring you our latest Category Insight supplement, where we turn the spotlight on confectionery & food, an impulse shopping category that contributes to store footfall and building basket size.

Through the voices of the brands we assess a testing period for the category, from the increased cost and complexity of packaging and labelling regulations to the limitations of space and the perceived prohibitive cost of promotions.

We also profile the activity of three champions of confectionery & food: Aer Rianta International, IDF in Belgium and Lagardère Travel Retail.

We hope you enjoy this edition of The Moodie Davitt Report and the special Category Insight title that accompanies it.
