INTERNATIONAL. Welcome to a special report on travel retail in Latin America, timed to coincide with this week’s ASUTIL Conference in Rio de Janeiro.

In this edition we speak to many of the major players across this vibrant and often turbulent region for travel retail.

We report on how the region’s number one player, Dufry Group, is taking significant strides to lift the quality of its retail estate. Planned store upgrades at Buenos Aires Ezeiza and Cancún airports will be among the highlights of Dufry’s development in Latin America this year.

These build on the opening of new shops at Rio de Janeiro Tom Jobim International Airport and a major renovation and expansion at Lima Jorge Chávez International Airport. Plus there’s more to come in Mexico City T2 and in the company’s expanding cruise retail operations. We bring readers an update on the latest developments.

For border retailers in Uruguay, such as Neutral Duty Free and Siñeriz Duty Free, there’s a slow but gradual return to optimism. That’s partly because of the Brazilian Real’s recent stability against the US Dollar, and the return of Brazilian consumers across the frontiers. That has encouraged investment, and promises a raising of standards – both in store environments and service – for shoppers in the years ahead.

We speak to airport companies ASUR, Inframérica and GRU Airport about their planned commercial upgrades, we hear about Grupo Britt’s plans for expansion and we speak to Motta Internacional and Duty Free Americas about their growing retail networks in the region.

Please enjoy this edition with our compliments.
