INTERNATIONAL. Welcome to the latest edition of Moodie Davitt Interactive – our fusion of print and digital titles – with a focus on the Asia Pacific market, as delegates gather for the TFWA Asia Pacific show in Singapore.

This digital version is not just an online replica of print but also includes dynamic elements such as video, and it offers multimedia advertising opportunities, which a growing number of our partners are taking advantage of. Hard copies are available at the Singapore show, along with our Category Insight supplement, which is dedicated to wines & spirits.

In these pages, Martin Moodie reports from South Korea, where leading travel retailers Lotte Duty Free, The Shilla Duty Free and Shinsegae Duty Free reflect on the lessons from crisis year 2017.

Even with the THAAD-related collapse in Chinese group tourism last year, the South Korean duty free market posted a +20.7% rise in sales. That was driven largely by an extraordinary boom in shopping by daigou traders, buying for subsequent resale in China. We assess that channel with the leading duty free players, and examine the wider picture for the business in 2018.

We are also on location in Japan, where a boom in inbound tourism (notably among Chinese) is fuelling sales in travel retail.

We look at the surging rise of the J-Beauty business in our extensive Japan report, as well as the fledgling channels of arrivals duty free and downtown duty free, and we bring you interviews with the major airports and travel retailers.

Beyond our core focus on Asia Pacific in this edition, we pay a visit to Gebr Heinemann, as senior management opens up about the company’s performance and its big plans for 2018. These include one of its biggest openings ever, at Istanbul New Airport, plus other exciting projects from Sydney to Moscow.

We are also on location in Paris, where Groupe ADP is well into a programme of heavy investment of space at Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports. A collaboration with Lagardère Travel Retail and JCDecaux in CDG Terminal 2E, Hall K represents a signature moment in that expansion, as we report.

Another highlight of our titles each May is our Category Insight supplement dedicated to wines & spirits. This time we attend DFS’s stunning Masters of Wines and Spirits event in Singapore, and speak to the luxury travel retailer about its approach to showcasing the fine and rare items that feature in the programme.

Alongside other major retailer interviews we also carry an in-depth survey of brand owners, who offer some refreshingly candid views on the health of wines & spirits in travel retail, and the risks and challenges the trade faces today.

Please enjoy the Interactive edition of The Moodie Davitt Report for May with our compliments.
