PORTUGAL. ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal has opened an upscale destination merchandise store named Portfolio at Lisbon Airport, as part of its drive to create a strong Sense of Place across its airport network.

The 400sq m unit in Terminal 1 features five separate “˜worlds’ offering products made by Portuguese manufacturers and designers under the themes Culture, Handcraft, Design, Fashion and Food & Flavours.

Alongside the themed “˜worlds’ there is a Portfolio Selection zone, which features products and gift items created exclusively for ANA’s new Portfolio brand.

The 400sq m Portfolio unit aims to showcase Portugal’s traditions and culture

Areas have been developed for interaction with customers and for children. There is also an entertainment and tasting area, a natural hanging garden, and an exhibition area for art and cultural works.

The store environment aims to reflect Portuguese heritage and character. The store features natural pine wood to evoke the country’s shipbuilding traditions and the Age of Discovery. The limestone and basalt floors are made of Portuguese “˜calçada’ paving stone. Visitors can also have a cup of coffee in the in-store café sitting on a traditional wood and iron garden seat, next to a vertical garden with Portuguese plants.

The wine zone is one of the store’s highlights

ANA brings technology into play too, notably in a high-class wines zone. Here, passengers can obtain suggestions from a touch screen on which wines will suit which occasions, with wines from across Portugal listed by region and grape variety. In addition, a video wall near the open-fronted entrance aims to draw visitors in. Visitors can also buy online at a soon to be completed website,
www.portfolio-store.pt, which links to ANA’s e-commerce platform.

The fashion area features leading Portuguese brands such as Parfois, Salsa, Sanjo, Cubanas and Muu alongside tapestries from renowned artist Joana Vasconcelos
Portugal’s Fado musical traditions are represented in the culture zone

The store – which is operated in partnership with the Portuguese division of leading concessionaire Ãreas – opened to travellers less than two weeks ago and will have its official opening with next week. The Moodie Report was offered an exclusive preview tour of the new unit on Monday.

ANA Retail Director António Luís Rodolfo said: “Our dream was to create a showcase for Portuguese talent, culture, products and brands, and the opening of Portfolio is our starting point. We have to respect our past, our history and our values, and we want to promote Portuguese producers large and small through a professional retail concept. If it’s a success, we will roll it out to our other airports and maybe even outside the airport environment.

“Creating a Sense of Place is one of our main strategic actions as a company. So many airports are the same all over the world so we wanted to create something unique. We do that in three ways. In the common areas of the airport we feature olive trees, Portuguese tiles and other materials, so the environment offers a flavour of the country. The second thing is to incentivise our tenants, even the international companies, to introduce some local values into the shop concepts, so we urge them to think global and act local. And the third element is to introduce brands that you can only find here.”

We’ll bring you more on this showcase for Portuguese products, and ANA’s development plans, in The Moodie Report e-Zine on Thursday.
