Lead architect Studio ORD begins contract on US$8.5 billion Chicago O’Hare expansion

USA. Lead architect Studio ORD has commenced its contract to design the US$8.5 billion expansion programme, O’Hare 21, for Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Over the next ten years, O’Hare 21 will deliver 25% more gate space, a more streamlined passenger experience and enable the airport’s future growth to improve Chicago’s international connections. The expansion will be funded from airport revenues.

The City of Chicago’s selection of Studio ORD, following a competitive procurement process, was announced in March and it is now officially under contract.

Ambitious plans: Under the O’Hare 21 programme, Chicago O’Hare International Airport will increase its gate capacity by 25%.

Studio ORD, whose new contract is valued at US$160 million, will work with the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), airline partners and other stakeholders on its design concept for the new O’Hare Global Terminal and Global Concourse.

Led by Jeanne Gang, Studio ORD is a joint venture of Studio Gang Architects, Corgan, STL Architects, Milhouse Engineering & Construction and Solomon Cordwell Buenz. This partnership has already been previously responsible for more than 150 airport terminal projects across the world.

Commissioner Jamie L Rhee said: “The CDA is thrilled to partner with Studio ORD to bring O’Hare into the 21st century and transform the travel experience from curb to gate for the 83 million passengers who rely on O’Hare every year.

“This experienced, world renowned team will help the City and our airline partners create economic opportunity for our communities while furthering momentum behind Chicago as a global leader in air travel.”

She added: “O’Hare 21 isn’t just a catalyst for transformation in aviation – it’s a catalyst for growth for Chicago’s 77 communities and the entire Chicagoland area.”

A second architect team will be selected in the next few months from the remaining four finalists who were shortlisted in the lead architect selection process to design the two new satellite concourses to be built west of Terminal 1.

The other finalists were Fentress-EXP-Brook-Garza Joint Venture Partners, Foster Epstein Moreno Joint Venture Partners, Santiago Calatrava and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

The City of Chicago also awarded three Construction Manager at-Risk (CMAR) contracts for key O’Hare 21 projects, including responsibilities relating to the planned Terminal 5 expansion and the new Satellite Terminal 2 and its associated APM tunnel.

The selected CMARs are Austin Power Partners, Turner Paschen Aviation Partners, and AECOM Hunt Clayco JV. Each of the three selected teams were awarded contracts valued at US$116 million.
