Larger than life: La Mer unveils giant Crème de la Mer jar installation in Hong Kong

Visitors to T Galleria Beauty by DFS Hong Kong, Causeway Bay have been met by an unexpected sight this month – a larger-than-life Crème de la Mer jar.

It is part of an installation and exhibition that celebrates the “transformative” moisturiser and takes an immersive look at skincare brand La Mer.

The world’s largest Crème de la Mer jar is on view at T Galleria Beauty by DFS Hong Kong, Causeway Bay.

The jar is making its debut in Asia and at five metres high is the world’s largest, La Mer said.

An exhibition running between 1 and 10 March takes a behind-the-scenes look at La Mer, with Crème de la Mer at the heart of the story. The moisturiser was conceived after 12 years and 6,000 experiments by Dr. Max Huber, the brand said, who suffered burns in an experiment gone awry.

In an immersive exhibition, customers journey through five moisture textures – Rich, Soft, Sheer, Balanced, and Cool.

La Mer said a cell-renewing ‘Miracle Broth’ is key to the product, with the cream “infusing skin with sea-sourced renewing energies, creating a natural, youthful glow”.

The exhibition begins as guests step into the giant jar, where they are immersed in an “oceanic realm” that represents the world of La Mer through the sounds of the sea and the soft glow of underwater lighting.

DFS, La Mer and Hysan Development brand representatives performed a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the installation.

Customers then journey through five moisture textures – Rich, Soft, Sheer, Balanced, and Cool – with each intended to represent one of the brand’s moisturisers through sensory stimulation.

The Crème de la Mer wall offers a backdrop for customers to take and share photos, while La Mer staff are providing bespoke consultations, introducing moisture rituals and sharing tips on how to “arrive hydrated” at travellers’ destinations.

Renowned Taiwanese makeup artist Perry Liu hosted a Skincolor de la Mer masterclass.

With a minimum purchase, customers will receive a complimentary La Mer luxury travel trunk case with the option of personalisation by calligraphy services offered on site (at weekends only).

The installation was opened on 1 March in partnership with DFS.

The neighs have it, the neighs have it

Being 63 means you need plenty of regenerating of course. So, before making the long trek over to the C gates at T5, I stopped in at World Duty Free to buy a tub of Crème de La Mer’s La Crème Régénération Intense, which I find pretty effective in warding off at least the worst ravages of age. The nearby FID screen was showing me I had ten minutes before the flight closed and I still needed to get the train to Concourse C, so I needed to move fast. I need not have worried for my customer experience at the La Mer counter was straight out of the training manual.
