AUSTRALIA. Lagardère Travel Retail has been awarded five Travel Essentials concessions at Gold Coast Airport in Queensland following what the airport operator and retailer described in a joint press release as “a very competitive tender process”.
All five concessions have been awarded for five-year terms. The contracts exclude the separate duty free concession [held by Lagardère Travel Retail’s Aelia Duty Free], which remains in place through to late 2018. The airport is undergoing a major redevelopment, dubbed ‘Project LIFT‘, now expected to be completed in 2019.
Under the newly awarded concessions, Lagardère will operate the News, Convenience and Souvenir sites for five years from the beginning of this month.
The French group currently operates NewsLink, Hub, Discover, M.A.C Cosmetics, Victoria’s Secret Beauty & Accessories, tech2go and Aelia Duty Free at Gold Coast Airport.
Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Marion Charlton said the awards followed a “strongly contested” RFP. “We are confident, based on our experience with Lagardère Travel Retail, that a strong mix of local flavour will be incorporated within the stores upon refurbishment completion early next year,” she commented.
The joint statement said: “This win will bring to Gold Coast Airport new and innovative concepts, as well as refreshing some of the successful concepts currently at the airport operated by the group.
“A stepped change will be introduced into the store design in collaboration with Gold Coast Airport to ensure the best designs, a true Sense of Place and innovative offers are in line with the changing Gold Coast market. A strategic combination of both Travel Essentials and Gift & Souvenir offers will enhance and add value for all stakeholders.”
Lagardère Travel Retail Pacific Region CEO Matthieu Mercier said: “We were thrilled to receive the news our offer was successful. Having operated in Gold Coast Airport since 2002, to be selected again as Gold Coast Airport’s partner of choice signals a long, confident and successful partnership in this fast growing airport.
“Our teams are committed to delivering exceptional concepts to the airport, together with strong staff engagement and award-winning customer service to all travellers, with an eye on the fast-approaching 2018 Commonwealth Games,” he says.
