Lacoste unveiled its space-themed Fall/Winter 2017/18 runway collection last week at New York Fashion Week.
The collection draws parallels between the heroes of aviation and the pioneers of the space age. Garments are based on an astronaut’s suit and include details such as multiple pockets, leather and cotton ribbing and knee and shoulder padding. Other details include patches of contrasting colours, variations of matte and shine and a mix of materials: leather, nylon, cotton, gabardine and tricotine, fleece and synthetic fur.
Lacoste Creative Director Felipe Oliveira Baptista, whose father was a pilot, has blended the aesthetics of conquest with the ‘mythical’ codes of grunge and ’90s streetwear. A new lease of life has been given to the large and small check brushed wool lumberjack shirt and oversized mohair cardigan, reminiscent of the style worn by Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain.
Garments feature iridescent reproductions of space artist Ron Miller’s prints. Full moons, sunsets or Saturn collide with dull brown and slate colours that are lit up by metallic effects and sparks of aniseed, ochre orange and lilac.
Double-faced materials allow for modularity within reversible pieces, which can be worn in various ways. Bags, made from leather or cotton, can be worn lengthwise from the shoulder down, handheld or as a backpack.
