Kreol Travel Retail launches vegetarian-friendly butter cookies

Danish Delights is an egg-free range of butter cookies suitable for vegetarians

Kreol Travel Retail has launched Danish Delights, a range of butter cookies suitable for vegetarians, exclusively in travel retail.

“We have had a lot of passengers enquiring about confectionery that is suitable for vegetarians, particularly biscuits and cookies as the ones available in the market usually have egg as an ingredient, so we decided to launch an egg-free variant of butter cookie,” Kreol Travel Retail CEO A.S. Lal explained.

“Maiden sales have taken place at Sharjah Duty Free and the response is very encouraging. We expect to sell this niche product at all the duty free operations in the region,” he added.

Highlighting the growing awareness among consumers of the benefits of vegetarianism to both individual health and the health of the planet, the company said that many are turning to at least partly-vegetarian diets as a shield against health-related food scares such as BSE/CJD and as a reaction against animal cruelty.

This trend has also been reflected in the growing range of vegetarian products on retail shelves, with major food producers moving into this segment to become global suppliers.

The company pointed to Heinz Frozen & Chilled Foods as one of the most well known, especially since its acquisition of the Linda McCartney brand and Ross Young non-meat products from UB Foods. Unilever’s Birds Eye Walls is promoting a wide range of vegetable-based products such as burgers plus its meat-free ready meals. The Astra-Zeneca-owned Marlow Foods supplies a wide range of its myco-protein Quorn brand to producers of vegetarian-friendly products.
