King Power wins contract to operate duty free pick-up counters at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi

THAILAND. King Power International will operate duty free pick-up counters at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport after winning the Airports of Thailand (AoT) tender.

The retailer emerged as the only bidder after the tender process launched last year; Bangkok Airways Public Company lodged an interest in purchasing tender documents but did not submit a proposal.

King Power will now be able to sell duty free goods in cities across Thailand with the option of airport collection at Suvarnabhumi. AoT will also offer its own pick-up counters under a two-tier system.

King Power’s financial offer exceeded the first year’s minimum annual guarantee (MAG) and the authority’s expectations, AoT said. Compensation will be adjusted for each year of the contract in line with inflation rates and passenger growth.

When it launched the tender, AoT said the counters would be “beneficial in creating fairer free competition as well as improving convenience for tourists by enabling them to buy duty free goods and collect them at the airport”. The counters will also “promote tourism revenue and increase AoT’s non-aeronautical revenues”.
