Kavalan launches its first travel retail-exclusive malt whisky

Taiwan’s Kavalan Distillery has unveiled Kavalan Original single malt whisky, the brand’s first travel retail-exclusive malt expression.

The new edition was spotlighted at an event hosted by Kavalan Distillery and its European distributor La Maison du Whisky (LMDW) at the Radisson Blu hotel in Cannes, during the TFWA World Exhibition.

Kavalan Distillery’s Master Blender Ian Chang said Kavalan Original underlined the company’s confidence in the travel retail channel.

A travel retail-exclusive taste of Taiwan: Kavalan Original

Kavalan Original is matured in puncheon sherry casks. On the nose it offers hints of almond, hazelnut, vanilla and milk chocolate, with traditional tropical fruit flavours and a taste of honey cake. Its taste is described as rich, with butter and caramel flavours merging with soft tannins.

Kavalan whiskies are distributed in travel retail by Gebr Heinemann, Lagardère Travel Retail, James Richardson Duty Free, MMI and Aer Rianta International.

The Kavalan Distillery was opened by the King Car Group in 2005 and has an annual production capacity of 5 million bottles. Chang said this was expected to double next year with the addition of ten copper stills.

To support its expansion plan, Kavalan Distillery is promoting its single malt expressions on billboard screens in New York’s Times Square. In Europe a media campaign is scheduled to start next month, where the brand will feature in top French, Italian, Belgium and UK magazines. Kavalan will also be highlighted in the Air France Lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

In 2014, Kavalan whiskies received more than 100 gold medals in international competitions. Earlier this year, Kavalan expressions claimed the five top International Review of Spirits rankings.
