Japanese spend rises +13% as Hawaii sees sixth straight month of tourist expenditure growth

USA (HAWAII). Visitor spending rose for the sixth consecutive month in November, according to Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Visitors to the Hawaiian Islands spent US$1.2 billion in November, a +5.6 rise year-on-year. Total arrivals grew +4.7% to 696,890 visitors, an all-time November record.

Encouragingly for Hawaii’s leading travel retailer DFS Group, Japanese spending increased by +13% for the month, reaching US$187.5 million. Arrivals by air from Japan rose +4.6% to 125,982. Visitors from Japan spent +7.3% more per day and +8.0% more per trip.

The Japanese honeymoon market, which comprised nearly 40% of the segment, grew +10.4% to 22,257 visitors in the month.

For the first 11 months, arrivals from Japan edged ahead by +0.9%. Over the same period Japanese spending rose +1.9% to US$1.9 billion.

Chinese visitor arrivals have fluctuated throughout the year and declined in November by -4.3% to 8,296. For the year-to-date they were down by -1.4% to 159,701. Daily visitor spending was also down year-to-date (-6.8%) compared to 2015, though China continued to rank highest (US$366 per person) of all visitor markets.

Korean visitor arrivals have increased every month this year. Arrivals rose by +18.4% in November to 23,992 and were +18.5% ahead year-to-date to 203,922. Daily visitor spending of US$292 per person year-to-date was similar to 2015.
