International Airports Day concept takes flight

INTERNATIONAL. Contributions are pouring in for The Moodie Davitt Report’s inaugural International Airports Day project.

We noted that there are ‘International’ or ‘World’ days marking hundreds of different sectors and subjects (see panel).

So, wouldn’t it be wonderful to celebrate the fascinating world of airports, those great crossroads of humanity that also serve as ampitheatres of commerce and culture?

In association with Dubai Airports, operator of the world’s busiest international airport, Dubai International, The Moodie Davitt Report is creating just such a day, at least hypothetically, for a special charity* publication. We hosted an international design competition online to come up with an appropriate logo and the winner is shown below.

We’ve chosen 17 December – the anniversary of the day (in 1903) that Wilbur and Orville Wright made their first flights at Kitty Hawk in the USA with their first powered aircraft. The Wright brothers had invented the first successful airplane and the aviation sector has never looked back since.

To honour the wonderful world of airports and all they stand for and contribute to mankind, we’re producing a special pictorial edition of The Moodie Davitt e-Zine on that day.

We are asking airport companies around the world to supply us with a SINGLE great image (hi-resolution please as each will be full-screen) that they think encapsulates something unique, memorable or indicative about their airport, together with very short explanatory text.

The content can be commercial (for example, shopping, dining or advertising); cultural (say, an art display, aviation museum etc); or operational (runways, ATC tower, terminal buildings, aprons etc) or people-oriented.

Airports can also send videos (with similar or different subject matter) as The Moodie Davitt Report’s spectacular new e-Zine format allows comprehensive multi-media content (The Moodie Davitt Report is also creating a dedicated website to archive the historical material that this project will generate and to build on in years to come).

Airports Council International Director General Angela Gittens is providing the foreword while Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths is writing the editorial leader.

“This project will serve as a unique celebration of airports worldwide,” said The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie, who conceived the project. “We’ve already received some amazingly evocative contributions from airports, big and small, around the globe and the finished product is going to be a magnificent celebration of what airports contribute to our world.”

“I have always been fascinated by what airports do but more importantly by what they represent – a constantly evolving melting pot of nationalities and cultures; a fusion of business and pleasure; a whirring blend of emotions from the joy you see in arrivals to the sadness one so often witnesses in departures.

The International Airports Day publication is being published in association with Dubai Airports, operator of Dubai International.

“We plan to mark this landmark day every year in the same way and in fact grow it so that International Airports Day actually becomes an established landmark in the aviation calendar. We’re thrilled that Dubai Airports, operator of the world’s busiest international airport, shares our vision and we look forward to creating a memorable testimony to airports that will be talked about all over the world.”

Note to airports: If you would like to be included in this publication, please send your material to Sinead Moodie at Sinead@MoodieDavittReport.com or Martin Moodie at Martin@MoodieDavittReport.com
