Images of the Day: Auckland Airport bounces back from devastating flooding

Our regular feature usually celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere. Today instead we celebrate the human spirit within the aviation sector in the face of natural disaster.

NEW ZEALAND. Today’s selection, courtesy of a LinkedIn post today from Auckland Airport Chief Executive Officer Carrie Hurihanganui, reveals the devastating impact of the floods that have hit New Zealand’s biggest city in recent days.

“What a couple of days it’s been at Auckland Airport and around Auckland. I want to acknowledge what a tough time it’s been for travellers who have had their plans upended by a natural disaster,” says Hurihanganu.

“Walking through the international terminal today, it’s hard to imagine it was under a metre of water 40 hours ago (I’m sure you’ve seen the images of the check in area under water!). Our challenges aren’t over yet, but I’m pleased to see international flights start to get back up and running in short time frame, given the scale of the event.”

Hurihanganui saves special praise for airport staff for their efforts during the catastrophic flooding that has claimed the lives of four Aucklanders during the height of summer.

“I’m in awe of the Auckland Airport team who have been working around the clock to help stranded travellers and get the terminal operating again – even when some of them were facing their own challenges at home with flooding,” she writes.

“They’ve served up more than 1,000 meals, provided 500 blankets and hundreds of water bottles, and the Auckland Airport Marae, Te Manukanuka o Hoturoa, welcomed weary families and the elderly into the wharenui overnight. So many organisations in the airport and wider community have also pitched in with support. My sincere gratitude to all of you.” ✈
