Image of the day: Sail Thru is the new Walk-Through

Our daily feature celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns from the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

We’ve all heard of walk-through retail. But sail-through? Now that’s a new one.

Dubbed the “world’s first sail thru supermarket”, this striking image (via retailer Majid Al Futtaim) shows a floating Carrefour supermarket just off the shore of Dubai.

The custom-built Aqua Pod, said Majid Al Futtaim, allows customers on small boats and jet skis to sail up and order at the window from a selection of food, drinks and small items such as sunscreen.

Yacht passengers can phone through their orders, which will be delivered by skiff within 45 minutes.

Visitors to three nearby beaches – Kite Beach, Jumeirah Public Beach and Al Sufouh Beach – can also take advantage of the skiff delivery service.

The service and the Aqua Pod itself have both been developed with an eco-friendly focus. Straws and bags, for example, are all biodegradable, and the Pod cleans the water behind it as it goes.

“More than ever, a successful business depends on continually reinventing itself to stay ahead of customer needs and expectations,” said Majid Al Futtaim Retail CEO Hani Weiss.

Well, they’ve certainly done that.

Now all we need is a yacht…
