Taking flight: Inauguration day at London Luton Airport in 1938

Our daily feature celebrates memorable scenes. moments, launches and campaigns from the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

London Luton Airport is rightly taking pride in its 80th anniversary, as it plots the next phase of its future. We capture the moment of the airport’s inauguration in 1938 in today’s chosen image (above), one of a series just released from the airport’s archives. Luton began life as a municipal airport before being used as an RAF base during World War II. Today, it is the UK’s fifth-largest airport, with 15.8 million passengers travelling in 2017.

Today, Luton is nearing the completion of its £160 million redevelopment project, which will upgrade the terminal building and increase annual capacity to 18 million by 2020. That also includes a more than doubling of retail space, with more than 30 new shops and restaurants opening in the terminal since the start of the year, including Chanel, Oliver Bonas, Ted Baker and Hugo Boss.
