Heathrow Expo showcases work of leading sculptor to travellers

‘Flame of the Spirit’ was inspired by symbols of the Olympics Games, both ancient and modern

UK. BAA’s Heathrow Expo programme, designed to celebrate the best of UK culture and commerce, has unveiled an 11-foot work by leading sculptor Ginger Gilmour, which will be on display at T5 for six months from 23 March.

Inspired by the symbols of the ancient and modern Olympic Games, the work, named “˜Flame of the Spirit,’ is said to celebrate the “diversity and inner beauty of mankind,” The plaster and glass fibre installation took several months to complete and weighs over 120 kgs.

Heathrow’s Expo programme was launched to provide opportunities for cultural creations and events that would not normally receive a high level of exposure, said BAA. Previous art and exhibitions include installations by students at Goldsmiths College and photographer Henry Reichhold.

Ginger Gilmour said: “I am thrilled to be exhibiting Flame of the Spirit at Heathrow Terminal 5. It is an honour to be able to showcase my art to a global audience and against such a majestic backdrop. I hope the sculpture will not only inspire passengers but also encourage them to enjoy a moment of stillness in which to reflect and unwind.”

Sarah Lewis, Sponsorship & Experience Manager at Heathrow Airport, said: “We are continually looking at ways to enhance the passenger experience and make Heathrow as much a destination for art as it is travel. The Expo initiative not only offers an international platform for artists such as Ginger but also enables people to take in some of the latest art and cultural offerings during their travels.”

Gilmour is also involved with ‘The Art of Sport’ in the Terminal 5 Gallery, a collection of works of art created by established and emerging artists whose work takes inspiration from the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
