Dennis Stone’s photography takes centre stage in the exhibition at London Heathrow to celebrate his career |
UK. London Heathrow Airport is celebrating the career of the airport’s longest-serving resident photographer, Dennis Stone, who has worked at Heathrow for 64 years, by hosting two exhibitions featuring some of the world’s greatest stars.
Frank Sinatra, Princess Diana and The Beatles take centre stage in the exhibitions, which will showcase images from the book ‘A Life At The Airport: A Heathrow Photographer’ published by the airport to celebrate Stone’s long tenure.
Heathrow has set aside two locations for installations and exhibitions in Terminal 5 to celebrate the photographer’s contribution to life at Heathrow.
The first installation features more than 20 of Stone’s favourite photographs, with personal insights into the stars he has met.
The second exhibition, which will be displayed in the Expo Gallery located in the Departures area, will house 25 framed photographs.
The exhibition will offer passengers the opportunity to bid for the prints, with all proceeds going to Heathrow’s Charity of the Year – Help for Heroes.
It will also be one of a number of sites across the airport where passengers can pick up a free copy of ‘A Life At The Airport: A Heathrow Photographer’.

Stone, 78, started working at Heathrow as a messenger boy, aged 14, and continues to work three days a week. His pictures are regularly featured in national newspapers and he also appeared in the BBC television series Airport, with the early programmes being written around his activities as the ‘grandfather’ of celebrity photography.
Stone said: “I feel very fortunate to have worked at Heathrow for the past 64 years carrying out a job I see less as work and more as a passion. I have made many good friends here and been privy to a world that has allowed me to capture unique moments and events. I am often asked about my job and the people I have met along the way, so it is an honour that my stories and photographs are to be preserved and shared with passengers.”
BAA Account Manager for Sponsorship and Experience Sarah Lewis said: “We are always looking for exhibitors that will add to passengers’ experience and enhance their journey through Heathrow, so it seemed fitting to showcase the many unique moments that have happened right here at the airport.
“Dennis has witnessed phenomenal advances in aviation and has photographed Heathrow’s transformation from a small airfield to one of the world’s busiest hubs. The exhibitions are a fascinating insight into Dennis’s remarkable career and the many personalities that fly through Heathrow every year. We hope our passengers will get as much pleasure from the exhibitions as we have had working with Dennis to produce them.”
5,000 copies of ‘A Life At The Airport: A Heathrow Photographer’ will be handed out to passengers passing through Heathrow. The two exhibitions of Stone’s work will be on display in T5 for one month.
