Haikou duty free stores close once again as Hainan battles COVID outbreak

CHINA. Offshore duty free stores in Haikou have temporarily closed again this morning (10 August) due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Hainan.

This represents the second temporary closure in recent days. As reported, the Haikou stores run by China Duty Free Group, GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS Group were all forced to shut on 8 August before being allowed to reopen the next day.

“The store is closed until further notice; the situation looks like it is getting worse,” one Haikou retailer told The Moodie Davitt Report. Another told us that they believed the closure would be for one day and that the government is determined to eradicate the problem by 12 August.

Local authorities continue to battle the COVID-19 outbreak on the island. Most cases to date are in Sanya to the south, which means that the stores there run by China Duty Free Group (Haitang Bay), CNSC and HTDF remain shut.
