Global passenger traffic growth slows to +3.6% in August

INTERNATIONAL. Global airport passenger traffic growth eased to +3.6% year-on-year in August, from +5.4% in July, according to Airports Council International (ACI).

International passenger numbers rose +4.0% while domestic traffic slowed to +3.3%, the lowest growth rate since June 2014.

International passenger traffic continued to grow in the Asia Pacific and Middle East regions in August, at +8.5% and +8.3% respectively year-on-year, while North America rose +4.6%.

In Europe, international passenger traffic growth eased to +2.0% year-on-year in the month. The slowdown was primarily driven by declines in Turkey and the Russian Federation, with -14.9% and -5.8% falls respectively at their major commercial airports, ACI said.

In the Latin America-Caribbean region, international traffic grew +5.0% in August, largely driven by the aviation upsurge in Mexico, while Africa posted a -3.6% loss in international passengers.

Domestic traffic was weaker than international in all regions except for Africa.

Domestic traffic in Europe and North America grew at +1.8% and +1.9% respectively in August. Asia Pacific topped domestic growth at +7.0%.

The highest growth rates in total passenger traffic in August were seen in the Middle East and Asia Pacific (+8.1% and +7.5% respectively), followed by North America at +2.3% and Latin America-Caribbean at +2.2%. Africa saw a -3.2% reduction year-on-year in total passenger traffic during August.
