Glenmorangie wheels out a limited-edition Original by Renovo

Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky has partnered with US hardwood bike specialist Renovo to produce a limited-edition bicycle made from whisky casks.

The collaboration is described as “unlike anything ever seen in the bicycle or alcohol world”.

“One-of-a-kind”: The Glenmorangie Original by Renovo

The partnership with Renovo – which designed the first engineered wooden bicycle more than a decade ago – is the second collaboration in Glenmorangie’s Beyond the Cask series. The series sees the casks in which the distillery’s signature single malt, The Original, is matured repurposed in innovative ways.

Last year, Glenmorangie, which is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, created limited-edition sunglasses, with British eyewear designer Finlay & Co.

For the Glenmorangie Original by Renovo bicycle, Renovo designers took inspiration from the shape of Glenmorangie whisky cask staves, with the downtube and top tube echoing the shape of the stave and the curve of the cask.

The hollow frame of each bicycle is created from 15 staves. The frames, which take more than 20 hours to create, are available in small, medium and large sizes and weigh approximately 8kg. They are individually numbered and decorated with Glenmorangie’s signet icon.

The Original’s suggested retail price is US$6,950.

Recycling takes on a new meaning through the Glenmorangie/Renovo collaboration

Glenmorangie Director of Distilling & Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden said: “From the moment we began talking to Renovo, we realised there was a natural affinity between our brands.

“Renovo shares our uncompromising approach to craftsmanship and, like Glenmorangie, is known for its pioneering work with wood. So, we shipped a pallet of staves from second-fill casks which once contained The Original from our Highland distillery to Renovo’s workshop in the US. Then, we began to imagine the possibilities.

“Glenmorangie is renowned for using the finest casks just twice, to create the smoother, rounder profile of The Original. This pioneering collaboration with Renovo brings new life to the casks which inspire our whisky. Each one of these limited-edition bicycles is a fitting celebration of our expertise in wood and shared passion for creativity.”

Renovo described Glenmorangie Original as “A rolling statement to the versatility of wood”

Renovo Founder Ken Wheeler said: “We are so excited to be working with Glenmorangie, a distillery with which we feel such affinity.

“Renovo is dedicated to honouring wood in the creation of our bicycles, engineered to perfection for a smoother ride. These beautiful machines, uniquely fashioned from Glenmorangie’s staves, will inspire anyone with a taste for innovation.”
