From healthy popcorn to energy balls: Retail inMotion and Eurowings introduce innovative inflight products

EUROPE. Retail inMotion and Eurowings are to introduce four new inflight products after holding a contest for start-up companies.

Working with NX-Food, a company which helps start-ups get their innovations trialled, the partners hosted a ‘Start-Up Pitching Day’.

Some of the “newest and trendiest” products were identified by the company earlier this year, with eight food & beverage start-ups then selected to present their ideas.

Ten judges from Retail inMotion, NX-Food and Eurowings (including a crew representative) assessed the entries. In a format reminiscent of Dragon’s Den [a television show in which contestants get three minutes to pitch their business ideas to five multimillionaires], they heard the ideas behind the start-ups and experienced the products first hand.

The four items selected to be offered onboard Eurowings flights in August are:

Karl Karlo Energy Balls: An organic, vegan energy snack that aims to boost passengers’ energy levels both during the flight and after they’ve reached their destination.

Energieliebe: An all-natural energy beverage with an attached sachet (or ‘KIQstick’) that passengers can mix in for extra vitamins, minerals and flavour.

Wildcorn: Air-popped popcorn with salty and savoury flavours. The product is not fried and contains no added sugar.

Nouri Boost Shot: A 100% all-natural, vegan energy shot that aims to boost passengers’ energy levels organically.

“Together with NX-Food and Eurowings, we selected the products that were particularly well-matched for an inflight environment,” said Retail inMotion Product Manager Onboard Retail Claudia Witt. “The finalists were drastically different, but each had the potential to be a unique, interesting and popular addition to the Eurowings selection.”

Retail inMotion Head of Onboard Retail Europe José Lirio Silva added: “On behalf of the selection team, I would like to say congratulations to the winning products and start-ups. We were elated to receive so many great applications for this extraordinary opportunity. We’re confident that we were able to select four products that Eurowings’ passengers will be excited about trying on board.”

Eurowings Vice President Customer Experience & Product Katrin Rieger commented: “Only recently we started very successfully with our new modern catering concept with Retail inMotion in our new ‘BIZclass’. Now, I am particularly pleased to offer our guests trendy products from start-ups such as healthy, savoury popcorn and energy balls on short- and medium-haul routes.”
