Frankfurt passenger numbers hit post-pandemic high as Fraport sees strong groupwide growth

The latest passenger traffic figures will be highly encouraging for Fraport and its commercial partners such as Gebr. Heinemann (pictured above)

GERMANY. Passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport continued its upward trend in June with about 5  million passengers travelling via Germany’s largest aviation hub. That represents an increase of +181% year-on-year and a new monthly record since the start of the pandemic.

However, when compared with pre-crisis June 2019, the airport’s passenger traffic was still down by -24.1%.

During the January-to-June 2022 period, Frankfurt Airport welcomed some 20.8 million passengers, representing an increase of +220.5% year-on-year over a low base. More relevantly, traffic decreased by -38.1% in the first six months of 2022 compared with the same period in pre-crisis 2019.

The passenger traffic figures look much better compared with a horrid 2021 but still fall some way short of the halcyon, pre-pandemic days of 2019. Nonetheless, progress is encouraging, especially in Greece. {Tables courtesy of Fraport, click to expand}

Fraport CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte stated: “During the first half of 2022, passenger traffic at many of our group airports grew faster than previously expected. We are pleased that people are eager to travel again.

“In Frankfurt, passenger numbers surged by more than +135% in June compared to February this year. This demonstrates the strong momentum driving air travel demand. We sincerely regret that, during peak traffic periods, our passengers in Frankfurt may currently experience extended wait times in the terminals, including at the baggage reclaim. We are working hard with all our partners to ensure that, in the medium term, we can again provide the quality standards expected by our passengers.”

The airports in Fraport’s international portfolio also continued their growth trend in June.

Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport welcomed 102,392 passengers in the reporting month. Combined traffic at the two Brazilian airports of Fortaleza and Porto Alegre grew by +53.5% to 937,225 passengers.

Lima Airport in Peru registered about 1.5 million passengers in June, up +81.1% year-on-year. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports saw total traffic rise to more than 4.6 million passengers in the reporting month, collectively exceeding pre-crisis levels for the first time (up +3.4% versus June 2019).

On the Bulgarian Riviera, combined traffic at the Fraport Twin Star airports of Burgas and Varna increased to 422,038 passengers. At Antalya Airport on the Turkish Mediterranean coast traffic advanced to nearly 3.9 million passengers in the reporting month.
