GERMANY. Frankfurt Airport has introduced reusable bamboo mugs with an airport-themed design in line with a sustainability initiative.
Operator Fraport said restaurants in both terminals are already offering a small discount to passengers, guests and airport staff who bring their own reusable container. They can now purchase the specially-designed cup at a cost of €12.95 (including the first filling), and will receive a discount of up to 50 cents whenever they use it, depending on the restaurant.
Alternatively, the discount can be donated to an environmental group.
The cup is made from a material as light as bamboo and was created by Berlin-based designer Julia Schonlau. It features everyday scenes of life at the airport, and is available at over 50 participating cafés and restaurants.
About 25,000 hot beverages are sold at the airport’s restaurants and cafés every day.
“Passengers and staff can now purchase the perfect reusable travel cup right here at Frankfurt Airport,” said Daniel Gemander, who works in Airport Retailing and is responsible for managing the launch of the airport’s own reusable cup.
“We’re especially happy that all restaurants in the terminals are taking part. That makes it more appealing for frequent flyers and airport staff to adopt the reusable cups. If we can reach these two groups then we’ve already made significant progress.”
