Fortaleza and Porto Alegre airports join Fraport’s international portfolio

BRAZIL. Fraport Brasil, a subsidiary of German airport operator Fraport, today began operations at Fortaleza Pinto Martins International Airport and Porto Alegre Salgado Filho International Airport.

The two concessions joined Fraport’s airportfolio in March 2017 after a public auction of four locations in Brazil’s third round of airport privatisations. Fraport is expected to invest around BRL600 million (US$184 million) to develop each airport.

Fraport Brasil Fortaleza was established to run the airport in the Ceará state for 30 years and Fraport Brasil Porto Alegre holds a 25-year concession, serving the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. As a gateway to southern Brazil, the airport has an important role in the traffic development of the Southern Cone, according to Fraport. The airports are located around 3,200 km by air from one another along Brazil’s Atlantic seaboard.

Today’s takeover concludes the required joint transition period with Infraero, the state-owned authority that previously ran both airports.

Dr. Stefan Schulte: “Our mandate is to enhance the passenger experience while strengthening the role of these airports for their respective stakeholders and regions”

Fraport Executive Board Chairman Dr Stefan Schulte said: “We are proud to welcome these two ‘best-located’ gateways to the Fraport global portfolio. With Porto Alegre and Fortaleza, we now have three airports in South America and a total of 30 airports where we are active worldwide. Our mandate is to enhance the passenger experience while strengthening the role of these airports for their respective stakeholders and regions.”

Fraport Brasil CEO Andrea Pal added: “We strongly believe in the potential of Fortaleza and Porto Alegre airports. We are focusing our efforts on raising the attractiveness of these two airports through ongoing improvements in infrastructure and operational processes.”
