INTERNATIONAL. Several brands that are prominent in travel retail feature in the 19th edition of Interbrand’s Best Global Brands listing.
The brand consultancy’s ranking of the 100 most valuable brands includes at least 22 that enjoy a strong presence in travel retail and a further eight food & beverage brands that are prominent in airports.
They are led by the number one in the rankings, Apple, a brand which is now valued by the list’s creators at US$214.48 billion. Samsung (6), Disney (14) and Nike (17) are other familiar travel retail names that feature prominently.
The highest entry into the top 100 this year is Chanel (23), a high-profile travel retail brand which is now worth over US$20 billion, according to Interbrand’s calculations. LVMH-owned Cognac house Hennessy (98) is another strong travel retail player among five new entrants to the Interbrand list.
One of physical retail’s greatest threats, e-commerce giant Amazon, tops the list of fastest-growing brands, with its value soaring by +56% in the past year. However, two prominent travel retail brands, Gucci (+30% and 30th overall) and Louis Vuitton (+23% and 18th), feature in the top five fastest-growing brands among the top 100.
Of brands prominent in airport F&B, Coca-Cola (5) is highest placed in the top 100 followed by McDonald’s (8), Pepsi (22), Budweiser (33) and Starbucks (57).
Interbrand Global CEO Charles Trevail said: “A decade after the global financial crisis, the brands that are growing fastest today are those that intuitively understand their customers and make brave, iconic moves that delight and deliver in new ways.”
