Ethical Indian tea specialist Vahdam targets global travel retail expansion

Vahdam – a supplier of fresh premium teas direct from Indian tea growers – has announced its intention to move into the global travel retail market.

The company was established by entrepreneur Bala Sarda just two years ago, and is currently supplying to five major duty free stores in India.

The Vahdam travel retail range offers 15 varieties of Indian tea in modern packaging formats.

Sustainability is a key theme in Vahdam’s provenance story, sourcing teas from more than 150 tea plantations and small individual farms in India.

Within the country, the business procures from five popular tea-producing regions: namely Darjeeling, Assam, Nilgiri, Kangra and Sikkim.

Vahdam spokesperson Shivam Dewan told The Moodie Davitt Report: “All our teas are procured directly from plantations and tea growers within hours of harvest, packaged garden fresh at our state-of-the-art tea facility in Delhi, India and then shipped directly to our own fulfilment centres in various parts of the world.

“By eliminating all unnecessary middlemen, we are not only able to make available high quality teas to consumers across the globe, but are also able to retain all earnings in the region where these divine teas are grown and nurtured by growers with immense love, care, and passion.

“[This] process ultimately helps every farmer get a better price for their produce.”

Premium appearance: Vahdam product Himalayan Gold is an exotic black tea, with a combination of golden, silver and brown tips and an aroma of dry and ripe fruit.

Vahdam claims it has so far been the source for more than 100 million cups of tea in about 85 countries to date, and was featured in Oprah Winfrey’s Favourite Things 2018.

The business was also the recent winner of an award from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations at SOFI 2018 for Best New Product.

In addition, it has won ten awards at the Global Tea Championship in the last 12 months.
