Esteé Lauder unveils a new, improved version of Perfectionist

Esteé Lauder improves on perfection with new Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum

Last week in London, Esteé Lauder previewed the latest extension to its best-selling Perfectionist anti-ageing/repair franchise, introduced in 2002 and upgraded in 2008. The newest incarnation, Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum, will be available at selected international airports from August, before rolling out worldwide in September.

According to Lauder, recent studies show that as we age, the energy our cells need to sustain the skin’s natural support structure decreases dramatically. As a result, skin gradually loses its ability to respond to the ageing process on every level, leading to the eventual appearance of lines and wrinkles. Therefore, to optimise the skin’s wrinkle-fighting ability, its natural energy potential must be boosted.

Fuelled by this insight, Estée Lauder research claims to have created a new class of anti-wrinkle technology to “supercharge” the look of skin. Step forward the brand’s new Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum, which is said to help correct, prevent and repair the look of serious lines with wrinkles with exceptional speed.

This advanced serum contains innovative CPR-75 Technology, which according to Lauder is proven to supercharge skin’s natural energised look and line-fighting power. The result is instantly plumped lines and wrinkles, plus smoother, fresher, younger-looking skin.

Pump it up
Estée Lauder findings have shown that youthful skin cells are supported by a vital ionic “pump”, known as the Trans-Epidermal Electrical Potential (TEEP), that promotes skin’s natural energy potential. Due to age and exposure to environmental assaults such as UV rays, skin cells’ vital “pump” begins to slow down, diminishing the natural energy potential needed to sustain optimal natural repair.

Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum incorporates a dual-action, advanced amino acid and protein complex that creates a virtual “force field” against the look of wrinkles, by supercharging and re-strengthening skin’s natural line-fighting power. It also helps to supports the skin’s natural, youthful support structure, by supporting important proteins, collagen, laminin and fibronectin.

Key ingredients include Artemia Extract: a zooplankton obtained via marine biotechnology, which helps recharge skin’s appearance; an Advanced Restructuring Protein, extracted from whey, that helps support skin’s natural collagen and fibronectin; and Chlorella Vulgaris Extract: an extract of micro-algae that helps recharge skin’s natural energised look and supports structural proteins.

The new Perfectionist formula also features flexible elastomer technology, which acts like a “liquid bandage” to instantly fill-in and virtually “immobilize” the look of wrinkles; light diffusion optics, which immediately diffuse and scatter light, blurring the look of lines and wrinkles and neutralising sallowness, dark spots and discolorations; and wrinkle lift restructuring peptides.

According to Lauder, on using Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum, the look of lines and wrinkles is instantly reduced by 37%, and skin feels smoother, fresher and more plumped. In tests, 78% of women said the look of their lines and wrinkles was immediately smoothed.

Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum is lightly scented with a delicate green-floral scent composed of jasmine, peony and rose. Dermatologist- and ophthalmologist-tested, the treatment is suitable for all ethnicities and all skin types, and should be applied to clean skin before moisturising.

Explaining the appliance of science
At the launch presentation, Estée Lauder Companies Executive Director, Global Research & Development-Biology, Nadine Pernodet explained in more detail the significance of Estee Lauder’s new research findings, and its relationship to the skin’s Trans-Epidermal Electrical Potential (TEEP).

“This new product is an upgrade of Perfectionist CP+, and usually we deliver an upgrade when we find something in the research lab that we think will push the performance of an existing product,” Pernodet explained. “That is exactly what has happened now.

“In the lab, we have measured the TEEP throughout the skin, from the top to the bottom. We can measure it because in the skin there are ionic pumps and channels where the ions flow, in order to improve the cellular communication, but also to produce energy. And basically this electrical potential translates for us the health of the skin. The higher this potential, the healthier and younger skin is.”¦Healthy skin cells produce a lot of energy, and follow a certain rhythm.”

Pernodet continued: “But when the skin cells age, the ionic pump and channels slow down, and this results in a much smaller TEEP. In turn that translates into cells which don’t have enough energy to fight environmental damage, and therefore the ageing process is accelerated.

“Our goal therefore was to find a technology that would re-establish the TEEP throughout the skin, to help the cellular communication, and boost the energy production throughout the skin, in order to help it fight environmental damage.”

That technology has been incorporated into Lauder’s new Perfectionist [CP+R] Wrinkle Lifting/Firming Serum. The C stands for “˜correct; the P is for “˜prevention’ and the R signifies “˜Repair’.

“CPR-75 Technology is the star ingredient of this new formulation,” Pernodet declared. “It helps to recharge the skin cells, to re-establish the electrical potential, to improve the cellular communication and the energy production, in order to help fight lines and wrinkles.”

The effect of CPR-75 on collagen production has delivered a new benchmark, not just for the Esteé Lauder brand, but across the entire corporation, Pernodet revealed. “[After treatment] we saw that the dermal fibroblasts produced a collagen increase of more than +250%,” she explained. “This is huge for us; a new breakthrough. We have never got such high numbers before.”

She continued: “In addition, fibronectin production increased by +133%. This [adhesive protein] is important because it is the “˜glue’ between the collagen fibres and the dermal fibroblasts.”

In terms of product results, Pernodet claimed that in clinical tests, after one month, more than 96% of women showed a “very significant” reduction of the look of their lines and wrinkles.

To coincide with the launch of the new Perfectionist, in-store BAs will engage customers by passing out 2D Wrinkle Tests. These compact cards contain a powder applicator and a visual patch. The idea is that the consumer applies the powder to their outer eye corner then, while smiling, presses the visual patch onto the powdered eye area. She should then remove and compare the visual patch to the reference fields on the card to determine whether she has “smooth skin”, “fine lines”, “wrinkles” or “deep wrinkles”. Depending on the results, an appropriate skincare regime can then be recommended.

The field of epigenetics (literally, beyond genetics), which inspired the research behind this latest formula, is likely to continue to play a key role in the future of skin care development, according to Pernodet.

“We are investing a lot in epigenetic research,” she confirmed. “The whole corporation is really a strong believer in it. We didn’t start yesterday – you already know about clock genes, which inspired a recent reformulation of Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex.”

Epigenetic research has also yielded the discovery of Sirtuins (longevity genes), which in turn inspired the creation of Clinique’s Youth Surge SPF15 Age Decelerating Moisturizer and Esteé Lauder’s Re-Nutriv Ultimate Youth Creme, among others.

Looking ahead, Pernodet will continue to work within the field of epigenetics, in a bid to better understand the impact of UV and pollution on skin cell health.
