Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle celebrates 20 years of fragrance freedom

Frederic Malle opened his first Paris boutique at 37 Rue de Grenelle on 6 June 2000

The Estée Lauder Companies-owned fragrance house Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle marked its 20th anniversary with a virtual Perfume Summit on 25 September.

It was attended by some of the world’s leading fragrance experts including Jean-Claude Ellena, Pierre Bourdon, Maurice Roucel, Anne Filipo, Dominique Ropion and Frederic Malle.

The fragrance house celebrated this landmark anniversary by highlighting some of its best-selling travel retail fragrances — Carnal Flower and Portrait of a Lady.

In addition, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle has also released a limited-edition 20th anniversary tote bag in selected travel retail doors. It is also launching two limited-edition bottles of Carnal Rose and Portrait of a Lady in selected domestic markets.

Carnal Flower was created in partnership with master perfumer Dominique Ropion. The bright floral scent opens with white flower top note, spicy Indian tuberose heart notes, followed by milky gardenia and musk base notes. Carnal Flower was crafted after over 18 months and 690 trials. It contains the highest concentration of tuberose in any perfume on the market. Carnal Flower is also available in a hair and body oil format.

Portrait of a Lady is an oriental fragrance that was also created in collaboration with Ropion. It offers bold notes of Turkish rose, amber and red berries and contains no less than 400 flowers per 100ml bottle. Portrait of a Lady is also available as a foam bath.

Frédéric Malle — grandson of Serge Hefler-Louiche who founded Parfums Christian Dior  —  launched Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle in 2000 with the aim of returning to the fundamentals of haute parfumerie. Over the last two decades, the brand has brought together some of the world’s leading perfumers. Each perfumer is given complete creative freedom to compose whatever scent they desired, following no marketing brief or production schedule.

Malle works with perfumers in the same way a literary editor works with authors, which is where the name “Editions de Parfums” came from. Each fragrance comes in packaging inspired by the covers of French publishing house Gallimard and signed by the perfumer who crafted it.
