Could it come down to penalties? Germany v England tussle in Moodie Davitt 2018 FIFA World Cup Charity Competition

INTERNATIONAL. A German, a Brit, an Irishman, a Dutchman and a Brazilian walk into a bar. Painful I know, but after they nurse their wounds, they start to talk football…

And then there were eight, writes our Football Correspondent Hedda Ball. That’s right, there are just eight teams left in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

But in an equally dramatic contest, no fewer than 11 participants are within ten points of the lead in our Great Moodie Davitt 2018 FIFA World Cup Charity Competition. And a whole lot more are still within Harry Kane striking distance.

The leader remains Steffen Brandt, Co-Founder & Manager of Miami-based travel retail specialist InnoTRI (and former CEO of Heinemann Asia Pacific and Heinemann Americas), who has been at the top of the league for what seems an eternity… well at least since his country failed, like an exhausted Olympian swimmer, to get out of its pool.

King Power International (Thailand), which controls English Premier League club Leicester City, is the event’s official brand partner. Leicester City’s star striker, Jamie Vardy, is part of the England team which now stands just three matches from glory (or perhaps one from a return home after a Swedish triumph in the quarter-finals?).

From a Low to a high: Is Steffen Brandt the German football team manager in waiting?

Steffen, rumoured to be the frontrunner as next German manager (why not swap a Low for a high?) for his knowledge of football, has had his lead narrowed to just three points over Moodie Davitt Report CTO (Chief Touchline Observer) Matt Willey.

Things are blooming for Moodie Davitt Chief Touchline Observer Matt Willey, a life-long Sheffield Wednesday supporter (he also shouts for them on Saturdays)

For Matt it was all gloss as his beloved England triumphed over Columbia in a penalty shoot-out yesterday. A long-time Sheffield Wednesday supporter (though he also shouts for them on Saturdays), Matt is understood to be suffering serious altitude sickness from the unexpected feeling of being near top of the table. He’s just one ahead though of Bahrain Head of Operations Domnick O’Reilly, the competition’s long-time leader.

The latter is tied with now flying Dutchman Johan Schölvinck of Market Square and Andre de Almeida of Loch Lomond Group, whose native Brazil remain one of the favourites to triumph.

Sophie Goujet of Concourse Display Management is now in sole place as the highest-place woman with 49 points, ten behind Steffen.

A big mover over the past two days was Cabeau’s Denz van der List, who surged up der list, from 15th to 11, after earlier collapsing like a punctured travel cushion from his leadership position. Expect him, like his product, to offer strong support in the next round.

Make sure you have your predictions in for Friday’s and Saturday’s quarter-final matches.

The following prize monies will be awarded to the chosen charities of the winning contestants:

1st – €3,000

2nd – €2,000

3rd – €1,000

Below is the league table from the morning of 04 July. We’ll bring you an update as the competition updates further.
