Clinique updates bestselling Dramatically Different lotion

Clinique has reformulated its bestselling Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion with improved moisturising technology and new barrier-strengthening benefits.

The latest iteration of the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion was revealed last month at a press event in Hong Kong, where members of the press – including The Moodie Report, the sole travel retail media – from across Asia Pacific gathered to learn about the new product.

The new Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ claims to double the moisturisation levels without an extra drop of oil, and improve skin’s barrier-strength by +54% in eight weeks – all without changing the lotion’s texture.

According to Clinique, a bottle of Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion – an integral part of the brand’s 3-Step Skin Care System – is sold every 4.87 seconds. Noting the decision to change the formula, Clinique Senior Vice President of Global Product Development Janet Pardo said: “The world has changed. Skincare technology has changed. And so we have changed.”

“Clinique is consistently researching new ingredients and technology to modernise its products and ensure clients receive the maximum benefits,” she added. “The world has changed since Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion was launched in 1968, and consumers need more from their daily moisturiser. As a leader in the skincare industry, it’s Clinique’s duty to provide a solution.”

To find out how people’s skin care needs have changed, Pardo worked closely with Clinique’s formulating dermatologists Drs. David and Catherine Orentreich. The brother-sister duo is the children of dermatologist Dr. Norman Orentreich, who worked with magazine editor Carol Phillips and the Lauder family to develop Clinique in 1968.

Running the Orentreich Medical Group in the same Fifth Avenue offices that their father practiced, the Orentreichs noted an increase among their patients in reported skin sensitivities, including redness, itching, burning, breakouts, dryness, and dullness. They attributed all these symptoms to one thing: a weakened skin barrier, which leaves the skin susceptible to environmental aggressors, climate change, travelling, lack of sleep, eating processed foods, and coping with the stresses of daily life.

It took six and a half years and 100 formula trials to get the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ just right. The new formula underwent extensive clinical testing – the biggest Clinique has ever undertaken, according to the brand. 1,600 people of different ethnicities across five countries participated, including existing, lapsed and competitive users.

The result: Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ received the highest possible marks, showing more than double the moisture levels, with skin staying consistently comfortable and moisturised throughout the day.

In order to accomplish its dual mission of providing barrier strength and boosting moisturising efficiency, Clinique paired new formulating technology with ingredients that have a long dermatological heritage for efficiency and comfort. The Orentreichs advise using ingredients familiar to the skin because these are effective and are least likely to provoke irritation.

The Barrier Strengthening Complex is a blend of sunflower seed cake, barley extract and cucumber fruit extract; this is complemented by the addition of new moisturising ingredients, hyaluronic acid, glycerine and urea.

Used in dermatology and medicine for years, hyaluronic acid is said to be well researched and proven effective as a moisture-binding ingredient. It occurs naturally in the body and helps skin hold onto moisture for improved hydration.

Glycerin is a well known humectant that attracts moisture to skin, according to Clinique. Considered highly “˜hygroscopic’, it absorbs water from the surrounding air and thus contributes to the increased moisturising power of the new Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+.

Urea is a naturally occurring component in the production of skin’s own natural moisturising factor (NMF). NMF ingredients mimic the function of healthy skin.

“You can have the best moisturiser in the world, but if your barrier is not intact, moisture evaporates,” Pardo explained. “The two actions, moisturising and barrier-repair, go hand in hand.”

The new Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ is recommended for Skin Types 1 and 2 (based on Clinique’s classification system), and can be applied morning and evening after Step 2, Clarifying Lotion. In the day, users can follow with a moisturiser or foundation with SPF protection.

The lotion is said to absorb quickly and easily, prepping the skin for additional serums and other treatment products. According to Clinique, many people find Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ just enough in itself.

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ will be available from mid-July at Clinique counters in travel retail locations across Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It will roll out from August 2013 at travel retail locations across the Americas.
