NEW ZEALAND. Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from companies to manage ten food & beverage venues across four precincts. They are situated in departures landside, domestic departures airside, international departures airside and international arrivals landside.

The airport is New Zealand’s second largest airport in terms of passenger volume and the South Island’s leading gateway. It has consistently been named the best airport across New Zealand and Australia by an independent international quarterly travellers’ survey.

It served 6.9 million passengers in 2019, including 1.8 million international passengers with connections to Australia, Singapore, Dubai, Fiji and China.

Passenger traffic has now reached almost 80% of pre-pandemic levels. The airport is also opening a new route to the US in December.

The ten F&B outlets will be launched to the market for the first time in 12 years with existing key leases to expire in June 2024.

Covering approximately 350sq m, the all-day restaurant in the tender will be required to operate from terminal opening until the last domestic departing flight

The airport company said that this retail offer provides an opportunity to refresh its F&B line-up amid travellers’ changing demands and Christchurch’s rapidly evolving F&B scene. It noted that menus should focus on fresh and local ingredients.

Commenting on the EOI release, Christchurch Airport Head of Customer & Commercial Park to Plane Craig Dunstan said: “We are looking for an F&B offer that matches our iconic and dynamic region. Our airport serves a unique part of the world, so we offer F&B operators the opportunity to be part of an amazing story.

“Our focus is on attracting a stellar F&B offering so we’re taking a flexible approach to this EOI. Normally we seek one operator for all of the outlets; this time we’re opening the door more widely. We’re happy to talk to operators who’d like to take on all the outlets or maybe just one or two. Our goal is to entice people to spend longer in the terminal to enjoy the very best in Canterbury.”

The café outlet will be located in place of the existing Relay travel essentials store, and on the apex of the spilt in flow between international and domestic departures

The F&B outlets available include:

  • Seven outlets in the departures landside precinct (serving both domestic and international passengers as well as airport staff and meeters/farewellers) including a 350sq m all day restaurant; a 212sq m hero coffee/café outlet; a 113sq m quick service restaurant; and four food-court style units spread across 220sq m.
  • One outlet in the domestic departures airside precinct of 193sq m.
  • One outlet in the international departures airside precinct of 117sq m.
  • One outlet in the international arrivals landside precinct of 188sq m.
The F&B space on offer at the airport international departures lounge will occupy a 117sq m space
The international arrivals area offers two attractive F&B locations, one adjacent to the rental car market and the other near the international arrivals lounge

The expected lease terms for the all-day restaurant, quick service restaurant and café outlet at the food court are for seven years, while that of small format stores are three to five years.

A 220sq m food court-style area will be allotted for small-format stores, while a 113sq m area at the departures landside precinct will be for a quick service restaurant

For the domestic departures airside and international arrivals precincts, the expected lease term is seven years, and five years for the international departures airside precinct.
