China Travel Retail and JMG-Research to publish consumer insights

CHINA. China Travel Retail (CTR), the conference and exhibition run by publisher Ink for brands, travel retail concessionaires, airports and airlines targeting Chinese travellers, has announced that for the second year running it will be publishing exclusive weekly highlights from “˜Chinese PAX Focus’, a study created in conjunction with JMG-Research, the travel retail consulting and market research company.

Starting on 12 March, every week until the CTR conference in Sanya on 8-9 May, delegates, exhibitors and sponsors will be provided with insights into the travel retail behaviour of Chinese consumers. In addition, key findings from this study will inform discussions at the conference itself.

Each weekly update will focus on a travel retail category, such as skincare, make-up & fragrances, wines & spirits, confectionery or tobacco. The first installment will be emailed and published online at www.chinatravelretail.com/insight on Tuesday 12 March, where users can view the content by registering their interest.

Jeffrey O’Rourke, speaking on behalf of event organiser Ink and Ink’s local Chinese partner GIS Events, said: “This is the second year that we have been able to share these invaluable new insights into the buying habits of Chinese passengers at travel retail locations both inside China and at overseas airports. Last year’s event was a big success in Shanghai, with over 70% of the delegates being native Chinese. However, it was clear from not only the delegates, but also the exhibitors and speakers, that there was a need for more research and insight into this market sector. We are very pleased to be able to work with JMG-Research again to offer this valuable information to all our delegates and exhibitors.”

“We are delighted to continue our association with CTR and Ink,” said JMG-Research founder Jerome Goldberg. “We have been working very hard to provide the latest industry insight and we know that there is huge demand from the market, which clearly needs more information. Our 2012/13 research provides more in-depth understanding and information about Chinese travellers, who still represent arguably the biggest opportunity for brands and businesses in travel retail.”

After the “˜Consumer Behaviour in Airports 2012′ study, produced by JMG-Research, the 2013 “˜Chinese PAX Focus’ research includes both a qualitative part based on face-to-face interviews and a quantitative part, based on answers from 4,500 Chinese international passengers living either in Beijing, in Shanghai or in a second-tier city. The survey investigates the travel retail habits of flyers, focusing on product category consumption, purchase planning, consumer attitudes and perceptions of the travel retail industry.

The results can be analysed by gender, age and journey type, allowing comparison of consumer behaviour by location, giving insights into trends in different markets on what the Chinese passengers are doing and what they are expecting.

The China Travel Retail event and exhibition will take place in Sanya and aims to showcase best practice both inside China at Chinese airports, on airlines, as well as showing how companies are selling to Chinese consumers who are travelling overseas.
