China connections boost Heathrow passenger numbers in August

UK. London Heathrow Airport posted its 22nd consecutive month of growth in August, handling over 7.5 million passengers (+2.6% year-on-year). It was the second busiest month in Heathrow’s history, with 15 separate days where the airport had over 250,000 passengers. 31 August was the busiest day ever for arrivals at 137,303.

Aided by Chinese routes, Asia saw the biggest increase in passenger numbers (+6.3%), as more passengers used new services from Hainan Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and Beijing Capital. This was closely followed by North America, up by +4.7%.

Buoyed by a larger number of direct China routes, Heathrow’s Asian traffic was the fastest growing by region in August

During the month, Heathrow had its first flight from the Chinese city of Chongqing operated by Tianjin Airlines. The route is Heathrow’s tenth direct Chinese connection.

As reported, an expanded Harry Potter shop opened in 1,000sq ft, nearly double the size of the previous store.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “August has been another stellar month for Heathrow with passenger numbers and freight volumes continuing to reach unprecedented heights. It’s brilliant to see consumers and cargo making their way through the UK’s largest port to these new Chinese destinations.”
