Carrasco Airport reduces wait times by implementing facial recognition technology

URUGUAY. Carrasco International has implemented facial recognition technology at its boarding gates, meaning passengers do not need to show their identity documents as they are identified by an image of their face.

The initiative is part of an over-arching technological development project called ‘Easy Airport’, which seeks to create a fully automated terminal.

“We want to transform Carrasco Airport into a beacon of innovation in Latin America,” says Corporación América.

Carrasco says it has become the first airport in Latin America where passenger flow management is fully performed through the use of facial biometrics technology, from the immigration checkpoint to boarding.

The system is initially being used on passengers flying with LATAM Airlines, but will subsequently be extended to all airlines.

Airport operator Corporación América said the technology will significantly reduce waiting times – thus increasing the amount of time available for shopping.

“We want to transform Carrasco Airport into a beacon of innovation in Latin America,” said Corporación América Uruguay CEO Diego Arrosa.

“To do so we have signed agreements with leading technology providers, and that has only been possible thanks to the highly skilled labour Uruguay has to offer.

“Once the Easy Airport project is completed, Carrasco Airport will be positioned as one of the most advanced terminals in the region in terms of its use of self-service technology and biometrics for passenger flow management.”
