Bringing cans to Cannes: Concha y Toro targets millennials with new Bonterra range

Viña Concha y Toro will bring three new 250ml cans from the wine brand Bonterra Organic Vineyards to the TFWA World Exhibition (Harbour Village, Accama Delta Yacht).

The new range, which features a Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé and Young Red, was launched in the US domestic market in the summer but will be showcased at the Cannes event ahead of its introduction to the travel retail market.

The 250ml wine cans are part of a “strategic approach” to travel retail, Viña Concha y Toro Global Travel Retail & Duty Free Director Diego Baeza says

Both organic wine and the 250ml wine can sub-category are major trends the range is designed to capitalise on. The IWSR has forecasted organic wine will be the fastest growing wine segment over the next three years with a CAGR of 9.2%, while Nielsen research said that sales of 250ml wine cans are up 77% year on year in the US.

Viña Concha y Toro Global Travel Retail & Duty Free Director Diego Baeza said: “Bonterra cans are an innovation, packaged for travel retail and poised to drive incremental growth.

“Expanding the appeal of wine with a ready-to-drink offer for areas such as cash tills, in-flight and arrivals stores reflects Viña Concha y Toro’s strategic approach to the travel retail channel. We are committed to bringing novelty and excitement that delivers exceptional value to shoppers and grows the total wine category.”

Tasting notes

2018 Sauvignon Blanc – This vintage from the Lake, Mendocino and Sonoma counties has aromas of grapefruit, citrus and kiwi and flavours of grapefruit, lime and zest before a melon and tart finish.

2018 Rosé – A salmon-coloured wine with aromas of strawberry, key lime, rosewater and hints of pineapple. The palate features consistent notes of ripe peaches, watermelon and pomegranate.

2018 Young Red – Made from the hard press of Bonterra’s rosé programme with a touch of Malbec added, this red is ideally served chilled. Aromas of roses, fresh fig, red berries and orange peel give way to a palate of raspberries, watermelon rind and pomegranate.
