Baltona captures key retail contracts at Wrocław and Katowice airports

POLAND. Flemingo International division Baltona Duty Free has won a tender for 800sq m of travel retail space at Wrocław Airport, covering four stores. It will run a five-year contract at the location.

In related news the company also placed the winning bid in a further retail tender at Katowice Airport in the country’s Silesia region.

At Wroclaw, the company will soon sign a contract with Poland’s airport company, Baltona said in a statement. It will take over commercial space that has been operated until now by Gebr Heinemann. The German retailer won a tender in April 2011, in which Baltona also submitted an offer.

Baltona said it “currently does not perform any activities at Wrocław Airport, and the acquisition of commercial space at this facility is in line with the [company’s] strategy [to secure] new sources of revenue.”

Baltona confirmed the lease agreement is for five years “during which the contract cannot be terminated by either of the parties”. The agreement is expected to have a net value in the range of PLN80 million (€16.7 million) to PLN100 million (€23.3 million) per year, according to data released by Baltona.

At Katowice Airport, the Polish company is to operate about 296sq m of commercial space in Terminal B. This will complement a further 1,000sq m run by Baltona in Terminal A.

Baltona said that its offer was named preferred partner at Katowice by the tender commission, and the company is now awaiting the signing of a contract with the airport operator. Under the tender terms, the lease agreement is to run until 31 August 2019, Baltona said in a separate statement. The value of the planned deal was not disclosed by the firm.

“The offer placed by the company will become binding 60 days following the day of the auction,” according to Baltona.

Wrocław Airport houses a total of 3,600sq m of commercial space, while Katowice Airport has an aggregate 2,900sq m of commercial space, according to figures from local consultancy Pasazer.com.

Baltona currently runs retail outlets at seven Polish airports: Warsaw-Modlin, Poznań, Gdańsk, Kraków, Katowice, Bydgoszcz and Rzeszów.

Flemingo International took control of the Polish company in 2010.
