AWPL unveils bespoke news & travel essentials concept at Brisbane Airport

Brisbane’s ambitious Domestic Terminal development

The Moodie Davitt Report will be providing dedicated ongoing coverage of this world-class airport development project, that will deliver approximately 50 retail offerings. The programme is designed to create a world-class airport shopping and dining environment for travellers.

As part of the project, airport operator Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) is reimagining the retail areas in the DTB.

The work will take place both airside and landside and will be completed by December 2020.

The project will result in a new internal atrium façade and vault design, new retail and food & beverage offerings, a new northern Food Hall and an upgrade of the retail mix and design on offer in the entire terminal.

The design objective is to create “ a liveable airport environment that provides a retail, commercial and recreational experience that is uniquely Brisbane.”

Costa Kouros: Capturing the uniqueness of the city in a world-class environment.

AUSTRALIA. Leading regional specialist travel retailer AWPL has opened News@BNE, a news and travel essentials concept exclusive to Brisbane Airport (BNE is the airport’s code).

The store is the first of ten that AWPL will open amid the airport’s A$40 million (US$29 million) northern Domestic Terminal Building (DTB) redevelopment (see sidebar).

AWPL claimed that News@BNE sets a new benchmark in Australia’s news and travel essentials category. The shop features news, books, magazines, stationery, beverages, snacking, confectionery, technology, and travel essentials within a 153sq m flagship site.

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) General Manager Airline and Retail Management Andrew Brodie said BAC is delighted to continue its successful retail relationship with AWPL and congratulated the company on delivering an exceptional store.

“AWPL has consistently demonstrated a willingness to align with our vision to deliver a liveable airport, and they have delivered a store that not only captures the uniqueness of Brisbane, it adds to the breadth and quality of retail range on offer for passengers travelling through BNE’s Domestic Terminal,” he said.

AWPL Managing Director Costa Kouros said: “The launch of News@BNE is a result of a strong and long-standing partnership with Brisbane Airport. News@BNE is a representation of our continued commitment to deliver a positive and memorable experience for our customers and enhance the reputation of Brisbane Airport.

“We are excited to have delivered a store dedicated to Brisbane and unique to Brisbane Airport, designed to represent the uniqueness of the city in a world-class environment.”

News@BNE will form an integral part of the customer journey and further enhance the strong Sense of Place visible throughout Brisbane Airport. The first store, opened at the northern (Qantas) end of the Domestic Terminal, will be joined by two Xpress@BNE arrivals convenience offerings in December, with an additional Xpress@BNE and five News@BNE stores due to open throughout 2019.

In addition, a first-to-market bookstore/café/local produce concept, Bound, will open by early 2020.
