Welcome to The Moodie Report’s Latin America Special Edition, published to coincide with the annual ASUTIL Conference, which takes place this week in Panama.

This title is available in full – editorial and advertising – through our unique online digital and iPad-compatible format as well as in hard copy to ASUTIL delegates.

Written by Peter Dowling, this in -depth report covers the regional market from north to south, with contributions from leading travel retailers and airport companies.

We profile the business in Panama, host country of ASUTIL 2015, where local duty free specialists Motta Internacional and Grupo Wisa are investing heavily in new stores at Tocumen International Airport.

Brazil – the powerhouse market of the region – will be among the big talking points at this week’s conference. A struggling national economy and weak (though recently stabilised) Real mean that consumers are tightening their belts. Yet the travel retail picture features some positives, among them the continuing development of the country’s newly privatised airports and the prospects of a boost to the Arrivals shopping allowance.

Despite its own economic and financial woes (including a currency devaluation), the industry picture in Argentina is also a more upbeat one that might be expected. Spending among Argentineans has improved sharply, with further growth expected as Dufry invests in the Buenos Aires airport business and as London Supply too eyes expansion in the southern Santa Cruz province.

Like other regional markets, Uruguay faces the challenge of falling spend from travelling Brazilians, and the possibility that rules governing duty free border shops could change in neighbouring Brazil. We examine the potential impact.

In recent years, Colombia, Chile and Mexico have been among the shining stars of Latin American duty free – we report on the latest developments in each of these markets.

We also bring you a special review from Ecuador – a thriving and highly competitive market – and take a look at some of the smaller countries in Central America, where retailers such as Motta and Wisa are making the most of the retail opportunities.

We hope you enjoy this edition of The Moodie Report dedicated to Latin America, one of the world’s most exciting travel retail regions.
