Alvarez & Marsal Spain confirmed for duty free advisory contract at Spanish airports

SPAIN. Consultancy group Alvarez & Marsal Spain has been confirmed as the supply partner to AENA for advisory services covering the forthcoming duty free tender at Spain’s airports. The company was named preferred bidder earlier this month as reported.

As reported, airport company AENA plans to tender the duty free contracts at 26 airports across its Spanish network in the fourth quarter of 2022, with new concessions to begin on 1 November 2023.

The advisory contract, which AENA said is valued at €3.6 million, will run for up to 36 months and will include the preparation, drafting and tracking of the tender documents and the bidding process.

Alvarez & Marsal was one of two companies to meet AENA’s requirements for the advisory contract, and finished ahead of AT Kearney in the technical rating. Two other consulting groups, Arthur D. Little and ALG Global Infrastructure Advisors, had also presented submissions.

If ratified for the advisory contract, Alvarez & Marsal will draw up the conditions for the forthcoming duty free tender, with Madrid-Barajas Airport among the prized locations (T4 pictured)

The advisory contract will comprise an initial analysis of the duty free business at global level to establish the bidding and contract relationship strategy; and the subsequent drafting of tender documents, along with advisory services during the bidding process.

Through Dufry, AENA currently has four duty free contracts across 26 airports, with 88 points of sale occupying more than 43,000sq m.
