Alberta comes alive: Calgary Airport’s International Terminal to open this month with a focus on Sense of Place

CANADA. Calgary International Airport’s new International Terminal is to open on 31 October. It will feature 50 shopping and dining locations, including two Calgary Duty Free stores.

The food & beverage offer combines locally-inspired outlets such as Spolumbo’s, Hana Sushi, Green Chili and Vin Room and international names such as Wolfgang Puck. [See below for a full list of vendors].

The airport said it would be the first terminal in North America to institute a call-to-gate system, which allows passengers to enjoy the amenities in a central area of the Departures Halls while waiting to board their aircraft.

Other services include five Kid Zone play areas for children and families.

The 186,000sq m terminal is part of a C$2 billion Airport Development Program and doubles the airport’s overall building footprint. The expansion project was funded by The Calgary Airport Authority and was established in response to continued passenger growth, with the airport handling a record 15.48 million travellers in 2015.

Sense of Place is also a key consideration at the terminal, with 15 different themeworks on display. The installations are focused on the natural landscapes and animal life of southern Alberta, and are located throughout the new terminal.

A new Connections Centre has been designed to speed up connections processes. A Connections Corridor links the existing terminal (which will become the Domestic Terminal) to the new one, with passengers able to walk, use moving walkways, or a passenger shuttle once they are behind the secure area.

The airport has also expanded its customer service team, with staff and volunteers able to guide passengers “from roadway to runway”.
