Airports Commission approves new food & beverage contracts at Minneapolis-St. Paul

USA. The Metropolitan Airports Commission has approved seven leases covering around 30 new food & beverage outlets at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. The awards were split between Areas (three leases), HMSHost (two) and Caribou Coffee (two), the airport company confirmed.

The new units, each under a ten-year contract, will begin construction on a phased basis in February, with completion of all premises scheduled by December 2019.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Director, Commercial Management & Airline Affairs Eric Johnson said: “We are very excited by the approval yesterday. We believe that when we are done with construction MSP will be setting a new standard for airport F&B concessions.”

Established Minnesota-based brand Caribou Coffee is one of many to capture new space at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport

Among the local or Minnesota-based names featured in winning concession packages were: Caribou Coffee, Bottle Rocket, Blue Door Pub, Hi-Lo Diner, Peoples Organic, Tattersall Distillery, PinKU Japanese Street Food, Leeann Chin and The Cook and The Ox, a concept from Jack Riebel, chef and owner of Minneapolis’ Butcher & the Boar and The Lexington in St. Paul.

Other brands that will join the diverse F&B offer at the airport will include Shake Shack, Buffalo Wild Wings, Joe & The Juice, Panda Express, Bruegger’s bagels, Smashburger, Zona Cocina, Firehouse Subs, Auntie Anne’s pretzels, Wendy’s, Moe’s Cantina, Chick-fil-A and Cinnabon.

The airport has unveiled a series of new concepts across retail and dining categories this year, as it transforms the commercial environment

Acclaiming its award of 12 outlets, HMSHost said its contract would be worth US$367 million over the ten years. The global travel restaurateur is partnering with Pady Regnier of St. Croix Airport Retail, Inc, and Robert Grace of Be Graceful Bakery and Catering, LLC.

“HMSHost is very excited to build on the strong partnership that we have built over the years with the MAC with this opportunity to open a variety of leading dining choices in Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport,” said HMSHost Vice President of Business Development Michael Price. “We thank the Metropolitan Airports Commission and our local partners for their commitment to delivering an experience that is sure to enhance the traveller’s journey.”

The HMSHost portfolio will include On the Border, PinKU Japanese Street Food, Shake Shack, Moe’s Southwest, Auntie Anne’s, Firehouse Subs and Starbucks Coffee. In Concourse C, it will open Joe & The Juice, Bottle Rocket from Blue Plate Restaurant Group, Tattersall Distilling, Smashburger, Chick-fil-A and Starbucks Coffee.

“Our goal is to provide a unique mix of locally and nationally branded restaurants with a wide variety of menu items and price points to satisfy everyone’s taste and budget,” said Metropolitan Airports Commission CEO Brian Ryks. “The new venues being introduced by HMSHost and its partners will greatly enhance the options available to travellers and help solidify the airport’s reputation as one of the best in the nation.”

The Metropolitan Airports Commission reported more than $200 million in concessions sales last year, with its tenants paying more than US$30 million a year in rent.
