Aéroports de Paris anticipates record Chinese traffic – 06/02/08

FRANCE. Aéroports de Paris (AdP) is predicting record traffic of 78,000 travellers between Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and China this month – an increase of +20% over February 2007.

To take full advantage of this, the shops at the location will be decorated in Chinese colours, to coincide with the Chinese New Year, which ushers in the Year of the Rat. In addition, passengers will be welcomed by staff speaking Mandarin, Cantonese and certain other Chinese dialects.

Chinese travellers are big fans of all things French, AdP noted, particularly with regard to gifts and souvenirs from their trip.

Within wines and spirits, Cognac – particularly Camus XO and Chungwha brands – is especially popular, with Chungwha and Gauloises the best-sellers within tobacco. Chinese passengers travelling to Beijing buy around 300 bottles of Cognac every month from CDG2E’s Pure & Rare store, according to AdP.

Within beauty, Lancôme treatment products and fragrance miniatures from Christian Dior, are popular. Omega, Longines and Tissot are the hot brands within watches, with his-and-hers purchases and two-tone items a sure-fire success. Chopard is a top performer within jewellery.

In March 2007 a Chinese passenger bound for Beijing broke the spending record at CDG, parting company with €23,000 in total. A frequent flier, and lover of fine wine, the passenger’s purchases included a bottle of Château Mouton-Rothschild 1945, a 1900 Armagnac, a Côtes du Rhone Hermitage La Chapelle 1978 and a very rare Cognac dating back to 1806.
